When God is asking us to do something, it is so easy to look at our peers to gage who else he might be asking the same thing. And it can be scary to feel God leading us into a direction that is not only unknown but maybe untried as far as we know.
Not one of us is made to go at it alone! Life is to be lived in relationships. And yet, there are times when God is asking us to dare to say or do something personally, that he might not ask anyone else to do. It can feel like you have to walk away from everything that you have known, in pursuit of conviction and obedience, and you have to do it alone. It is your journey alone. Not somebody else’s.
And it is not a one-time-only thing either. I have had many moments of being asked to respond to God’s personal leading and am looking at one before me even right now. And every time I had to make a choice to give into fear or feel the fear and do it anyway!
Can you remember the story in John 21 when Jesus reinstates Peter, after Peter denied Jesus in front of others three times? Here is what is recorded after Jesus asked Peter a third time.
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’
Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.’ 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, ‘Follow me!’
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is going to betray you?’) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, ‘Lord, what about him?’
22 Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.’
And there is such a good lesson for us in here. “Follow me”. We have to stop looking around at what others are doing? Wondering what God is asking them to do or be…
This topic has so many layers. *sigh* Because this isn’t just true for this life but also eternally! Once we have understood the depth of love Jesus has for us, he wants to know if we love Him in return too! And if we love Him, personally! And just as his love looks like something, our love towards Him must looks like something too. Isn’t that in any love relationship like that? I know it is.
God is a personal God and he has ways to reach my heart in ways only I would get. I am sure you can attest to that too. Yes? And part of this intimate relationship is working out the specific route God has for us, individually, and taking it. And it can be all sorts of scary. Don’t I know it! And though it may feel lonely for a moment, usually there will be others that we might meet as we keep on walking, at least for a season! Because God is never only just speaking to one person alone. He might just be speaking to you over here and x over there and you know nothing about it! (Remember Elijah and the other prophets he knew nothing about?)
So, when fear raises its head, I believe God sees an opportunity. An opportunity to perfect love within us.
And it is that agape, the sacrificial kinda God love towards us, shown to us by Jesus and embedded into our very core through the HS that drives out all fear. It allows us the freedom to make some bold choices and moves.
God has not let us down yet! People might have. Our imagination has. Opportunities have. And especially when situation were painful it can be hard to trust and try again. And the enemy will jump at the opportunity to throw some doubt our way… “Did God really say?” “Does he really exist?” Just like he has always done and probably always will.
The only thing standing between our now and the future God is promising us is our TRUST! And God has time to build trust again. He is not afraid of your fear! How can he be. There is no room around Him for that. He is perfect love! And he will perfect our love too! Once he has… CHOOSE! Feel the fear and move towards loving and obeying Him and do it anyway! Because he might just use your courage to perfect your love!
